Applying the universal answer

Today’s article discusses the ideas of yin and yang in the first programme’s application, particularly an application called ‘the universal answer’, a technique which can be applied to most combative hand to hand situations the the wing sun practitioner isn’t sure to how deal with the attacker.

using the technique:

the technique can be broken up into 4 points:

Come into contact with your opponent -

When the opponent comes into range of striking, meet him with force by stepping forward and extending both your front leg and your arms into a traditional wing tsun guard.

Stick to your opponent if you meet any of his arms of leg before your limbs find an opening to strike

3. don’t force it - if you enemy tries to use force to push through you defence, let the force go and counter-strike when the gap in his defence if visible. If the opponent retreats, follow him, stepping in to kick and finish with a barrage of punches.

If you meet no opposition of limbs when you raise your guard before the encounter, immediately strike before he has the chance to.

it’s advantages in combat:

The universal answer gives a core “go to” idea of how to approach a fight before the first punch is thrown out of range of your opponent. As wing tsun is self-defence system designed for ordinary people of any height or size. Most people that come to a wing tsun school haven’t had any real experience with combat, martial arts or even martial sports. Because of this, the universal answer provides students with a sure-fire technique that can be used as a tool for most situations to defend yourself as a victim to an incoming attack.

what it teaches

The focus however on the first programme when it comes to the universal answer, is not necessarily the application, but what the application teaches. This universal answer is a student’s first real encounter with applying the wing tsun principles and style of combat in a self-defence scenario. Both striking and reacting to strikes just as it would be in a self-defence situation. This gives the student an idea of what wing sun combat actually looks like, and a enlightened idea as to what skillset that come to fruition with dedicated training.

It’s always important to re-cap as often as you can on your wing tsun programmes, as they are the foundation of your skills. But always remember to enjoy yourself and train hard!
